Here is a BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation of Mark Twain´s classic novel of adventure, loyalty and responsibility.Young Huck Finn can´t get along with the Widow Douglas´ attempts to ´´sivilize´´ him or the smothering discipline that she and her sister serve up at home. So when his drunken, good-for-nothing father turns up and kidnaps him, Huck takes his cue to leave - and escapes to Jackson´s Island. There he meets runaway slave Jim, and the two become firm friends. Their bond of trust holds strong as they travel down the Mississippi river on a raft - witnessing misdeeds and murder along the way - and are separated, captured, and re-captured before continuing in their bid for freedom.Full of tension, excitement, comedy and drama, Twain´s sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is also regarded as a comment on the slavery and colour prejudice inherent in the mid-19th century American South. The Melody Man: Joe Davis and the New York Musi...

The story of a New york record man whose extraordinary career spanned jazz, blues, rhythm & blues, rock, country, ethnic, and pop music Joe Davis, the focus of The Melody Man, enjoyed a fifty-year career in the music industry, which covered nearly every aspect of the business. Not well-known to the general public, Davis was one of those individuals who enabled greats to emerge. He hustled sheet music in the 1920s, copyrighted compositions by artists as diverse as Fats Waller, Carson Robison, Otis Blackwell, and Rudy Vallee, oversaw hundreds of recording sessions, and operated several record companies beginning in the 1940s. Davis also worked fearlessly to help insure that black recording artists and song writers gained fair treatment for their work. Much more than a biography, this book is an investigation of the role played by a versatile music entrepeneur during much of the twentieth century. A musician, manager, A&R man, record executive, and publisher, his long career reveals much about the nature of the music industry and offers insight into how the industry changed from the 1920s to the 1970s. By the summer of 1924, when Davis was handling the ´´Race talent´´ for Ajax records, he had almost ten years to his credit and more than five decades of musical career ahead of him. This book is an incomparable look behind the scenes of music creation and dissemination. This book was never released in the United States and was available only in a very limited print run in England. The author, noted blues scholar and folklorist Bruce Bastin, has worked with fellow music scholar Kip Lornell to completely update, condense, and improve the book for this first-ever American edition. Bruce Bastin, East Sussex, England, is managing director at Interstate Music, Ltd. His books include Crying for the Carolines and Red River Blues: The Blues Tradition in the Southeast. Kip Lornell, Silver Spring, Maryland, is a member of the faculty at The George Washington University. This is his fourteenth book about American music, including three others with University Press of Mississippi.

One of the bloodiest incidents in New York´s history, the so-called Astor Place Riot of May 10, 1849, was ignited by a long-simmering grudge match between the two leading Shakespearean actors of the age. Despite its unlikely origins, though, there was nothing remotely quaint about this pivotal moment in history - the unprecedented shooting by American soldiers of dozens of their fellow citizens, leading directly to the arming of American police forces. The Shakespeare Riots recounts the story of this momentous night, its two larger-than-life protagonists, and the myriad political and cultural currents that fueled the violence. In an engrossing narrative that moves at a breakneck pace from the American frontier to the Mississippi River, to the posh theaters of London, to the hangouts of the most notorious street gangs of the day, Nigel Cliff weaves a spellbinding saga of soaring passions, huge egos, and venal corruption. Cliff charts the course of this tragedy from its beginnings as a somewhat comical contretemps between Englishman William Charles Macready, the haughty lion of the London stage, and Edwin Forrest, the first great American star and a popular hero to millions. Equally celebrated, and equally self-centered, the two were once friends, then adversaries. Exploiting this rivalry, ´´nativist´´ agitators organized mobs of bullyboys to flex their muscle by striking a blow against the foppish Macready and the Old World´s cultural hegemony that he represented. The moment Macready took the stage in New York, his adversaries sprang into action, first by throwing insults, then rotten eggs, then chairs. When he dared show his face again, an estimated twenty thousand packed the streets around the theater. As cobblestones from outside rained down on the audience, National Guard troops were called in to quell the riot. Finding themselves outmatched, the Guardsmen discharged their weapons at the crowd, with horrific results. When the s... ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Nick Sullivan. A searing debut novel centering around a gay-to-straight conversion camp in Mississippi and a man´s reckoning with the trauma he faced there as a teen. Grad student Will Dillard has largely buried memories of the summer he spent at a camp intended to ´´cure´´ homosexuality. But when he finds out a horror movie based on the camp is hitting theaters, he´s forced to face his past - and his role in another camper´s death. As he recounts the events surrounding his ´´failed rehabilitation´´, Will strikes out on an impromptu road trip back home to Mississippi, eventually returning to the abandoned campgrounds to solve the mysteries of that pivotal summer. With a masterful confluence of sensibility and place, How to Survive a Summer introduces an exciting new literary voice from the American South. ungekürzt. Language: English.
