´´It could scarcely be said that any [of the officers in Longstreet´s corps]...save one had by this date displayed qualities that would dispose anyone to expect a career of eminence. The exception was Hood. Anyone who had followed the operations of the Army after Gaines´s Mill would have said that of all the officers under Longstreet, the most likely to be a great soldier was Hood.´´ (Douglas Southall Freeman, Lee´s Lieutenants) The history of war is replete with examples of men who distinguished themselves in battle only to disgrace themselves after being promoted to commands above their capabilities. During the American Civil War, that man was John Bell Hood. Hood was one of the most tenacious generals in the Confederacy, for better and worse. This quality, which made him one of the best brigade and division commanders in the Army of Northern Virginia also made him ineffective when he was promoted to higher commands, forever marring his career at Atlanta and Franklin. Although Hood may have sullied his reputation, the brigade that bore his name suffered no such fate. Organized in Richmond, Virginia on October 22, 1861, Hood´s Texas Brigade was one of the most formidable fighting forces of the Confederate States of America (C.S.A.) during the American Civil War. At times undisciplined, the men who comprised this brigade were a group of fearless and determined volunteers-turned-soldiers. Over the course of the Civil War, the Texas Brigade engaged over 4,000 men and was comprised of the only Texans to fight with General Robert E. Lee´s Army of Northern Virginia in the Eastern Theater. With the exception of Chancellorsville, these men fought in every major battle in the East, and they also participated in significant battles in the Western Theater. Of the more than 4,000 men who fought with the brigade over the course of the war, approximately 600 remained to surrender at Appomattox. The brigade suffered a horrific casualty rate of 61 p... 1. The Stonewall Brigade: The History of the Most ...

April 18, 1861, marked the date Southern forces started pouring into Harper’s Ferry, Virginia. Six days earlier, shots had been fired at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, marking the beginning of the Civil War, and Virginia officially seceded from the Union April 17. The following day, men arrived in the town where John Brown’s attempted uprising was quelled less than two years earlier. The men came from all portions of the Confederate States of America (C.S.A.) and the border states of Kentucky and Maryland, but the preponderance of volunteers came from Virginia. Once the Confederate troops occupied Harper´s Ferry, martial law was declared and so-called ´´feather bed” Confederate military officers, often referred to as ´´swells”, were replaced by professional soldiers with military training. One such man who arrived from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) was Thomas Jonathan Jackson, who on April 27 was ordered by Virginia Governor John Letcher to take control of the troops converging on Harpers Ferry. He did as ordered and began to form what became the renowned Stonewall Brigade. Jackson and his brigade earned the nickname ´´Stonewall” at First Manassas by turning the tide of that battle, and they would become known as the legendary foot cavalry by bottling up three different Union armies in the Shenandoah Valley in 1862. Although Stonewall Jackson and the Stonewall Brigade may share the most famous nickname to come out of the Civil War, it’s still unclear whether Barnard Bee, the general who provided the legendary name at First Manassas, meant it as a complaint that they were not moving or as a compliment for standing resolute in the heat of battle. Regardless, the Stonewall Brigade went on to fight in every major battle in the Eastern theater of the American Civil War, to the extent that of the 6,000 men who fought with the brigade over the course of four years, less than 200 remained by the time General Robert E. Lee s... 1. Language: English. Narrator: Scott Clem. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/119662/bk_acx0_119662_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.

Granbury´s Texas Brigade: Diehard Western Confe...

John R. Lundberg´s compelling new military history chronicles the evolution of Granbury´s Texas Brigade, perhaps the most distinguished combat unit in the Confederate Army of Tennessee. Named for its commanding officer, Brigadier General Hiram B. Granbury, the brigade fought tenaciously in the western theater even after Confederate defeat seemed certain. Granbury´s Texas Brigade explores the motivations behind the unit´s decision to continue to fight, even as it faced demoralizing defeats and Confederate collapse. Using a vast array of letters, diaries, and regimental documents, Lundberg offers provocative insight into the minds of the unit´s men and commanders. The caliber of that leadership, he concludes, led to the group´s overall high morale. Lundberg asserts that although mass desertion rocked Granbury´s Brigade early in the war, that desertion did not necessarily indicate a lack of commitment to the Confederacy but merely a desire to fight the enemy closer to home. Those who remained in the ranks became the core of Granbury´s Brigade and fought until the final surrender. Morale declined only after Union bullets cut down much of the unit´s officer corps at the Battle of Franklin in 1864. After the war, Lundberg shows, men from the unit did not abandon the ideals of the Confederacy--they simply continued their devotion in different ways. Granbury´s Texas Brigade presents military history at its best, revealing a microcosm of the Confederate war effort and aiding our understanding of the reasons men felt compelled to fight in America´s greatest tragedy. The book is published by Louisiana State University Press. 1. Language: English. Narrator: James McSorley. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/018484/bk_acx0_018484_sample.mp3. They Must Be Made of Iron: A Historical Drama o...

Without question, the most famous battle of the American Civil War took place outside of the small town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, which happened to be a transportation hub, serving as the center of a wheel with several roads leading out to other Pennsylvanian towns. From July 1-3, Robert E. Lee´s Confederate Army of Northern Virginia tried everything in its power to decisively defeat George Meade´s Union Army of the Potomac, unleashing ferocious assaults that inflicted nearly 50,000 casualties in all. Day one of the battle would have been one of the 25 biggest battles of the Civil War itself, and it ended with a tactical Confederate victory. To an important degree, Gettysburg played out as it did because of the Union Army´s most famous brigade. The title of ´´Iron Brigade´´ has been given to a number of different US Army brigades over the last century and a half, but it has become almost entirely synonymous with the Civil War soldiers who fought in the brigade for the Army of the Potomac. Also known as the ´´Iron Brigade of the West´´, ´´Rufus King´s Brigade´´, and the ´´Black Hat Brigade,´´ the Iron Brigade was comprised of the 2nd, 6th, and 7th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiments, the 19th Indiana, Battery B of the 4th U.S. Light Artillery, and later, the 24th Michigan. The Eastern Theater of the Civil War saw the bloodiest and most famous battles, as well as the biggest losses, giving the brigade a chance to demonstrate its mettle during legendary confrontations with Robert E. Lee´s Army of Northern Virginia, most notably during its heroic actions on the first day of Gettysburg, which historian Alan T. Nolan once called the Iron Brigade´s ´´last stand´´. 1. ´´Very funny!´´ says Bob Saget. ´´A brilliant writer,´´ says Howard Stern. Called the ´´female Dennis Miller´´, and with an edginess compared to Amy Schumer, everything is a target and nothing is off limits for Kat Radley. Her quick-fire anecdotes as well as her hilarious pop culture references have earned her accolades from Bob Saget and Howard Stern. Hailing from Montclair, Virginia, Kat Radley began her stand-up comedian career as a contestant in Rooftop Comedy´s National College Comedy Competition. After being voted into the final four by the public, Radley landed a coveted spot in the Aspen Comedy Festival, representing her alma mater, UVA. Prior to her public debut, Radley unwittingly honed her craft during her upbringing in a large Irish Catholic family, each sibling claiming to be funnier than the next. Beyond her siblings, much of Radley´s passion and early inspiration for comedy comes from a combination of her fondness and admiration for the Spartan Cheerleaders of Saturday Night Live and Conan O´Brien´s quick, infectious wit on Late Night with Conan O´Brien. Since launching her career, Radley made her stand-up television debut on FOX´s Laughs and appeared in many notable festivals, including the Out of Bounds, Laughing Skull, and Women in Comedy festivals. She was also a finalist in the Magners Comedy Festival and the World Series of Comedy, where she took home the Friars Club Audience Award and earned the distinction of Comic to Watch from Time Out New York. In addition to appearing at festivals, Radley performs improv and sketch at the Upright Citizens Brigade and IOWest Comedy Theaters in Los Angeles and hosts her own YouTube talk show, A Chat with Kat. 1. Ironically, one of the generals who often escapes the attention of Civil War fans who compile the lists of best generals is the man who won the war´s most famous battle, George G. Meade (1815-1872). In fact, Meade has become a perfect example of how the generals who did not self-promote themselves and write memoirs after the war had their reputations suffer in the ensuing decades. When people think of Appomattox Court House, they think of Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee. Few remember that the commander of the Army of the Potomac at the end of the Civil War was not Grant but Meade. Meade exemplified modesty and competence, serving as a career United States Army officer and civil engineer who fought with distinction in the eastern theater of the Civil War. During the first half of the war, Meade rose from command of a brigade to command of a division and finally command of the entire Army of the Potomac just days before the Battle of Gettysburg. Naturally, he is best known for defeating Robert E. Lee´s Army of Northern Virginia at Gettysburg in July 1863, although he´s not nearly as well remembered as his Confederate counterpart, and he has even been eclipsed in popularity by some of the men he commanded at Gettysburg, like Joshua Chamberlain. If Meade distinguished himself at places like Antietam and Gettyburg, why is he frequently left out of the historical narrative of the war? Meade had a notoriously short temper that hurt his popularity with the press, his men, and contemporaries during the war, despite how well he commanded. Perhaps more importantly, Meade´s relatively early death in the decade after the war prevented him from defending his record and his decisions during and after Gettysburg. Lincoln mistakenly thought Meade blundered by not being more aggressive in pursuit of Lee after Gettysburg, when in fact Lee´s men constructed strong defenses and invited attack on a number of occasions during their retreat. Just as significantly... 1. Language: English. Narrator: Scott Clem. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/087993/bk_acx0_087993_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.
